The City of
EL CENTRO
The City of El Centro,
covering 6.25 square miles, is the largest of three major cities
in the Imperial Valley of California.
It is the County Seat and the principal trading
center of the County. It is a labor surplus area, with
unemployment rates well above the national and state average. El
Centro is accessible via the Interstate Highway 8 crossing East
and West near the Mexican border and State Highways 86 and 111
from the north, which continue to the Mexican Border.

Economic Growth & Trends
El Centro's population was 36,717 in 1994 and has been increasing steadily. The average age of its residents in 1990 was 27.6 years old with 9.47% of the population being between 18-24 years old, 31.72% between 25-44 years old, and 8.06% between 45-54 years old.
El Centro has a wide variety of business with the majority including agriculture, retail trade, services, and wholesale trade.
Agriculture is by far the most significant industry in Imperial County, and portions of manufacturing, wholesale trade, and services have significant ties to agriculture. The population of the Imperial Valley is still growing and the number of construction projects is increasing so that retail outlets, especially restaurants and markets, are continually being built.
Because of the population increase, services employment is expected to grow. Also, positive employment outlooks are expected in agriculture, manufacturing and construction.
Non-farm wage and salary employment is expected to maintain a slow but steady growth. This expansion will be mainly fueled by the government, retail trade, and transport and construction sectors, and especially by the two state government prisons.
